Mother’s Day 2020

Mum’s been the word for diocesan primary students in the lead-up to the big day. Teachers and students have been creative in finding ways to show their appreciation for everything their mums, grandmas and significant women do for them.

Holy Name, Forster

In English, Year 1 students used iPads to create a short video explaining why they’re grateful for their mum and what makes their mum so special. Students wrote their ideas down in their Learning Journal and then used the “Sketches School” app to draw pictures signifying the special things their mums do with and for them. The students then inserted their pictures into the “Clips” app and recorded themselves reading about their special mothers. To complete the videos, the students chose background music they felt their mum would enjoy listening to. Year 1 did a fabulous job creating these beautiful videos for their wonderful mothers.

St Columban's, Mayfield

The dads and children of St Columban’s Primary School, Mayfield were given a secret mission – to make a Mother’s Day poster and send it to the school to be made into a slideshow.

We hope this surprises the mums in our community as we were unable to hold our Mother’s Day stall this year.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums and grandmothers. We hope you have a lovely day.

St Joseph's, Kilaben Bay

This year we celebrated our beautiful mothers and significant women in our lives a little differently. Instead of our Mother’s Day liturgy celebrations and morning tea, we set up a socially distant takeaway drive-thru breakfast.

We decorated our drive-thru and organised music to add to the atmosphereOur families were treated to a bacon and egg sandwich and a special Mothers’ Day prayer to take with them to enjoy at a venue of their choice, such as the lovely Lake Macquarie, at the oval, at home, or at grandma’s house.

Some children of essential workers had their breakfast in our hall to avoid social gatherings. They enjoyed each other’s company from afar.

We would like to wish all mothers and significant women a happy Mothers’ Day 2020.

St Patrick’s, Wallsend

To celebrate our mums, grandmas and special ladies in our lives for Mother’s Day, St Patrick’s Primary School, Wallsend hosted a Zoom morning liturgy on Friday 8 May.

To emphasise the significance of the liturgy, St Patrick's sent a Compass alert to all families asking them to contribute a few things, such as photographs of students with their mums, drawn portraits of their mums and/or short video clips of students telling us what they love most about their mumsgrandmas and/or special ladies. These images and videos were collated and presented in our Zoom liturgy for all to enjoy

Since students were advised to stay home, St Patrick’s have hosted three Zoom liturgies. These events are lovely as they involve students at school and at home, bringing us together as a school and faith community.

St Columba’s, Adamstown

Mother’s Day at St Columba’s Primary School, Adamstown was very different this year.  Normally, we’d celebrate with a liturgy and a morning tea, as well as making sure everyone had something special for their mums with gifts made in classrooms and purchased through our Mother’s Day stall.

This year, we had to include little challenges within our home-learning plans for the children to come up with creative gifts. We loved what they have producedWe also asked our families to share with us a special photo for our online celebration and had the children who have been at school to share what was so special about their mum.

We hope everyone has a very special day on Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day.
