St Nicholas Busy Builders

The children in the Yunung room have been investigating an interest in construction and vehicles over the past week.

The children will often notice the trucks and emergency vehicles as they drive past the centre, not to mention the excitement of waving to the helicopters that fly past overhead. During our literacy group time we have been reading the Construction Crew books by Sally Sutton as we explore this interest further and learn about the many ways vehicles are involved in construction.

The children are becoming experts at recognising a variety of vehicles, such as bulldozers, excavators and cement mixers. We have extended on this by incorporating technology to watch short videos of actual construction vehicles at work.

The children have also used the toy excavators and dump trucks to create their own construction in the sandpit. This also provides children with opportunity to talk about what they are doing with the trucks and develop their descriptive language. “Look, I can push the truck and dig.” Investigating this interest has provided the children with the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the world in which they live.
