I hope many of you experienced an increase in the numbers of people attending Mass over the weekend, and the extra joy of hearing the voices of those assembled responding to the prayers and singing without the restriction of masks. This was my experience at the Cathedral on Sunday evening.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have managed to catch some of the highlights of the Winter Olympics. I have marvelled at the ability of humans to train and achieve such excellence in what seems to me dangerous pursuits. Almost all things on ice and snow seem to be accompanied by high speed and incredible grace.

I love the way our Sunday scripture readings are relevant and provide us with guidance for our lives each week. For those who are able to attend Mass or who read the scriptures daily, they too find what they read applicable to their lives. And so, for this particular Sunday, people are being asked to trust in God both now and for eternity. The response to our Responsorial Psalm was, “Happy are they who hope in the Lord.”

I am aware that the first Sunday in February (Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time) has been designated by the Australian bishops as Word of God Sunday, typically held on the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time in other parts of the world.
