NAIDOC celebrations at St James' Muswellbrook

The school community of St James’ Primary School, Muswellbrook recently held their annual NAIDOC event focusing on this year’s theme, ‘VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH. Let’s work together for a shared future’.

The day commenced with an Acknowledgement of Country, prayers and reflections led by our Stage 3 CREST Crew students (Confidence, Respect, Equality, Support and Thrive).

The school community continued their reverence as they took part in a Smoking Ceremony run by Jacob Ellis from Ochre Opportunity Hub before launching into a rotation of activities.

During the day, students engaged in traditional Indigenous sport, yarning circles, dadirri meditation, language activities, storytelling, drama, dance and a Bush Tucker lunch provided by an amazing team of parent helpers.

Students also learnt about the Uluru statement from the heart and gained an understanding of the meaning of treaty. Our budding rappers and artists enjoyed hearing about the multi-talented Baker Boy, who was named Young Australian of the Year 2019, and about the winning entries in both the national and local 2019 NAIDOC Art Competitions. For many, a highlight was seeing themselves and their peers appear on screen in our own short film, ‘What Does NAIDOC mean to you?’.

During the afternoon, the school gathered again to recognise and award students who had submitted exceptional NAIDOC competition entries.

To the delight of students, staff and families, the day concluded with a traditional dance performance led by Jacob and including around 90 students he has been working with throughout the year.

The excited faces and informed discussions were proof of the day’s success in highlighting the importance of the 2019 NAIDOC theme.

We are blessed to belong to such an enthusiastic and supportive community.
